The International High School of New Orleans received an award in December for its work on Legacy Park.
The Louisiana Association of Public Charter Schools honored the IHSNO with the 2020 Community Roots Award, which recognizes a Louisiana charter school that demonstrates community engagement through partnerships with outside organizations and individuals.
The high school partnered with the Downtown Development District, NOLA Public Schools, Groundwork New Orleans, American Society of Landscape Architects and other partners to transform a portion of their parking lot into a new public greenspace in the Lafayette Square neighborhood in Downtown New Orleans.
The beautifully designed park incorporates storm water management features, an outdoor classroom with a flexible lawn and shaded outdoor seating that serves students and the community.
The actual construction lasted for about four months. The ribbon-cutting took place in Nov. 2019 and was a much-needed space during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The project was made possible by a grant from ASLA.
