VESTRE IS BUILDING THE WORLD’S MOST ECO-FRIENDLY FURNITURE FACTORY IN NORWAY
Vestre, a Norwegian manufacturer of urban furniture, has announced plans to build a stunning and sustainable new furniture factory and nature center—said to be the world’s most environmentally friendly.
For 70 years, Vestre has produced high quality furniture, from seating and tables to shelters and parklets used by many landscape designers, municipalities and urban planners.
“Vestre is leading the manufacturing industry into a green shift by proving green growth is possible,” CEO Jan Christian Vestre said in a video statement. “Yes, we are expanding fast and we create new and profitable jobs in many countries, which is a good thing obviously. But at the same time we are actually reducing our impact on the climate and nature by using fewer resources and adapting to a fully circular economy where throw-away solutions don’t exist.”
Vestre, in partnership with Bjarke Ingels Group, is building The Plus, named for its shape. The 70,000 sq ft factory in Magnor, Norway, will be a global showcase for sustainability and highly efficient manufacturing. In addition, the campus will include a visitor center and a 300-acre park. The company will be opening its doors to the public to visit the Vestre Experience Centre and Vestre Forest Camp.
Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG) is a Danish firm of architects, which was established in 2005. The company employs over 500 architects and designers in Copenhagen, New York, London and Barcelona.
The $31 million project has already broken ground and will be rated BREEAM Outstanding, the highest possible environmental certification representing less than 1 percent of buildings.
