I hope you’ve all had an empowering #WomeninHorticultureWeek. I’m thrilled to be launching Pro Landscaper USA South at a time when Women in Horticulture are being celebrated. I thought I’d take this opportunity to tell you my story and how I got into the industry.

I grew up in South Louisiana but actually started my journey in the horticulture industry in Aberdeen, Scotland. I thought I would only live in Scotland a few years, but I ended up starting a garden design and project management construction business. After 12 years, Papillon Designs and Landscaping Ltd. has a strong team (of mostly women!), and we are still going strong.

Papillon Designs and Landscaping Ltd.

In 2019, my husband and I decided to move with our two children from Scotland back to my hometown in Louisiana. I’m working with UK-based media company Eljays44, whose brand Pro Landscaper is currently in the UK, South Africa and the Middle East. I’m excited to launch Pro Landscaper USA South! Through our website, magazine and events, my goal is to combine and connect all the disciplines of landscaping.

The Green Industry is such a fantastic place to be: working outside in the fresh air, helping people grow plants, improving mental health issues, doing our part for the environment … I could go on.

Female-owned businesses employ 9.4 million workers in the US and generate nearly $2 trillion in revenue. This should not be taken lightly! But while this number continues to grow, we still only represent 6 percent of the nation’s workforce. I hope our new magazine will help women in the Southeast come together. Now more than ever, let’s promote ourselves and the value we bring to the industry!
