Little Interview With Allen Owings

Allen Owings is Professor Emeritus of Horticulture at LSU AgCenter; the Senior Horticulturist at Bracy’s Nursery and a Horticulturist at Clegg’s Nursery in Louisiana.

What inspired you to get into the industry?

My love of agriculture dates to my youth gardening with my dad, grandfathers and uncles. My dad was an agronomist and university educator. I found the horticulture side of agriculture instead of the agronomy side of agriculture.

What’s the best part of your job?

Doing something everyday that I love doing. 

Formal or casual?

Casual

Neutral or colorful?

Neutral but love purple and gold

What would you blow your money on?

Fund scholarship endowments at LSU and Mississippi State University.

What’s the biggest challenge you’ve faced professionally?

Supervising individuals in the workplace. I am not good at that aspect.

Who do you most admire in the industry?

The nursery growers and horticulture leaders from the 1970s and 1980s that grew the nursery, landscape and garden center industries.

What’s your ideal Saturday?

At the garden center, playing golf, enjoying football, dining with friends.

What is your favorite phrase, slogan?
