Kevin Hargrove is Director of Operations, Grounds Services for Landscape Services, Inc. in Nashville, Tennessee.
What inspired you to get into the industry?
I began cutting lawns in high school to make money to pay for baseball gear. This turned into a small business that eventually steered me towards a career in landscaping. I had no idea the size of this industry until after college and learned of all the great opportunities once getting into the commercial side of the business.
What’s the best part of your job?
Impacting the professional and personal lives of our team members. Seeing people have the opportunity to grow, join our team and support their families is something I take great pride in. I enjoy coaching leaders in the business and seeing their success.
What’s the biggest challenge you’ve faced professionally?
Labor is the biggest challenge and most consistent. Trying each day to make sure our teams have the people they need while implementing training programs. There is a shortage of skilled labor so our teams are learning to adapt and retain their people while training the next generation of landscapers.
What’s the one thing that would make the industry better?
An investment into education and for landscaping to be considered a skilled trade. Most people do not think about landscaping being a profession that you can make a living doing. Apprenticeship programs at the high school level for those who enjoy being outdoors and working with their hands.
What’s your favorite spot at home?
In the kitchen or at the grill. I enjoy cooking for my family, and it is our central gathering place.
Where’s your happy place?
My happy place is on or at the baseball field. I love coaching my boys and their teammates. I will take practice, a game or watching the STL Cardinals.
What’s the key to great design?
A great design can mature gracefully. The right plants and trees installed for what the space will be and not what it needs today. Clients investing in robust maintenance programs to support the investment they have made in those great designs.
What’s your ideal Saturday?
My ideal Saturday is playing catch or golf with my boys, cooking on the grill for my family and friends—and a fire.
What are you most proud of?
I am most proud of my family. My wife and I have three great boys who keep us busy and active.
